What am I going to learn?

 

Theory Class/ Drive 1

This class will cover most of the information you will need to pass your learner licence theory test. There will be assessment of your learning as part of the class.

Any pre-reading or conversations you can have before the class will assist you.

Most people obtain their Learner Licence on first attempt of this class. You can attempt as many times as you need.

Urban area participants - you will have a Facilitator run this class. We call it Drive 1. You are eligible to attend after you enrol then book onto the class list through the DriveSafe portal.

Remote area participants - you will need to coordinate with one of the organisations in your community. CDP are usually very helpful.

 Conditions for Learner Drivers

Learner Drivers have a few conditions they must stick to:

  • Zero Blood Alcohol Content at all times - NO GROG EVER
  • Mobile phone cannot be within hand reach - EVER
  • Maximum speed of 80km/hr - ALL THE TIME
  • L Plates displayed when driving - ALL THE TIME
  • Fully licensed Driver alongside - ALL THE TIME
  • You cannot drive if you do not have your licence.
  • Northern Territory do not use a log book system.

 

Driving Lessons

There are 23 foundation skills you require to be a safe driver. We call these competencies.

Urban area participants - You book your lessons with a Driving Instructor after selecting them on DriveSafe portal.

You can access 5x e-vouchers valued at $50 each. If you can complete competencies 1-11 you will be eligible to attend Drive 2.

Remote area participants - If no Driving Instructor is available in your community you can practise with any fully licensed driver.

There are also people called Supervising Drivers who are driving coaches who can help. Ask DriveSafe for more info.

 

Drive 2

Urban area participants - You are eligible for this short class after you complete competencies 1 -11. Attending this class unlocks the second 5x e-vouchers valued at $50 each.

Remote area participants - This isnt available or relevant for you.

Driving Test

We call this the Practical Driving Assessment. You must have held a Learner Licence for 6 months uninterrupted.

Urban area participants - After you have competencies 1 - 23 marked off you will be eligible to book this Assessment.

Remote area participants - Visit DriveSafe when they are in your community to do your Driving Test.

Conditions for P Plate Drivers

Provisional (P Plate) Drivers have a few conditions they must stick to:

  • Zero Blood Alcohol Content at all times - NO GROG EVER
  • Mobile phone cannot be within hand reach - EVER
  • Maximum speed of 100 km/hr
  • P Plates displayed when driving - ALL THE TIME
  • Have Licence when driving - ALL THE TIME
  • Northern Territory do not use a coloured 'P' or log book system.
  • There are no limits on passengers, but please ask your passengers not to distract the driver.

If you are under 25 when you get your P Plates you will need to follow these conditions for 2 years.

If you are 25 or over when you get your P Plates you will need to follow these conditions for 1 year.
